Is You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle Worth the Hype?

Synopsis

Naomi Westfield has the perfect fiancé: Nicholas Rose holds doors open for her, remembers her restaurant orders, and comes from the kind of upstanding society family any bride would love to be a part of. They never fight. They’re preparing for their lavish wedding that’s three months away. And she is miserably and utterly sick of him.

Naomi wants out, but there’s a catch: whoever ends the engagement will have to foot the nonrefundable wedding bill. When Naomi discovers that Nicholas, too, has been feigning contentment, the two of them go head-to-head in a battle of pranks, sabotage, and all-out emotional warfare.

But with the countdown looming to the wedding that may or may not come to pass, Naomi finds her resolve slipping. Because now that they have nothing to lose, they’re finally being themselves–and having fun with the last person they expect: each other.

Review

Where does one even begin reviewing this?

Honestly, this book is a bit of a mess.

For starters, how did Naomi and Nicholas meet and become engaged? They seem such an odd pairing, I almost felt like I was reading a second book in a series, like the reader is missing some crucial info. A quick Goodreads search confirmed this is not part of a series, so I was left wondering.

Naomi is creative, quirky, seemingly looking for excuses to end the engagement at all times. But who’s Nicholas? And moreover, why is he with Naomi? What made him fall in love with her? We know quite a bit about Naomi and very little about Nicholas. I’d hazard a guess that this would’ve read much better if we got both POVs in alternate chapters.

Overall, I’ve found this to be overhyped. That’s not to say you won’t enjoy (at least) parts of it. There’s funny moments (job hunt, in-laws, crafts!), it reads quickly and it’s a light read if you’re looking to make your Goodreads reading challenge, this one may be worth a shot. But don’t go into with too high expectations, the writing is not the greatest, the characters not quite developed. I believe it’d translate to screen very well though.
