End of Year Reading Survey

Happy New Year everyone!

The book survey was originally created by Jamie at the Perpetual Page Turner blog.

I read a whooping 230 books which is my personal best in a year. Check out the full list on Goodreads.

1. Best Book You Read In 2020?

You can find my top 10 books of 2020 here. I read some great titles if I do say so myself.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

That’d be Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Christoff and Beach Read by Emily Henry.

 3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?

The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara – can’t decide what sort of surprise this was, but a surprise nonetheless.

4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)?

Same as number 3) plus A Little Life also by Yanagihara.

5. Best series you started in 2020? Best Sequel? Best Series Ender of 2020?

The Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch with Red Seas Under Red Skies being the best sequel. Best series ender goes to The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin.

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2020?

I’ve definitely re-discovered Haruki Mukarami, was pleasantly surprised by Kazuo Ishiguro and was hit by the Yanagihara train. In the fantasy genre, I’d definitely point out Jemisin, Scott Lynch and Samantha Shannon.

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?

1Q84 by Haruki Murakami as I haven’t read much about magical realism till now, I’m absolutely smitten and will read more!

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?

Writers & Lovers by Lilly King for unputdownable.

9. Book You Read In 2020 That You Would Be MOST Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

The Deep by Rivers Solomon.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2020?

A Little Life wins again!

11. Most memorable character of 2020?

Locke Lamora from the Gentleman bastard series by Scott Lynch.

 12. Most beautifully written book read in 2020?

Perhaps and odd choice for this question but I have to mention The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro somewhere in this survey.

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2020?

I’m repeating myself but I kind of have to – this is again Yanagihara with The People in the Trees.

 14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2020 to finally read?

The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons.

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2020?

Many a passage from South of the Border, West of the Sun by Haruki Murakami.

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2020?

Shortest was Girls, At Play by Celeste Ng and longest was Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson.

To add a few musing of my own to this survey: I did not read any title from my end of year Tag except for Red Seas Under Red Skies, but I did read 7 of the books I said I wanted to read in my TBR, The Guest List was a DNF, The City We Became is carrying over to my 2021 TBR and I’m currently reading The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, I just have not managed to finish it yet. Let’s say that was a moderate success.

Overall, I’m very happy with my reading this past year and I have big plans for 2021.

Leave you end of year survey in the comments below.

Happy New Year!!
