It’s time to wrap up my 2020 reading, here’s my top ten list of books I read this year (not necessarily published in 2020). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Writers & Lovers by Lilly King<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Blindsided by her mother’s sudden death and wrecked by a recent love affair, Casey Peabody has arrived in Massachusetts in the summer of 1997 without a plan. Her mail consists of wedding invitations and final notices from debt collectors. A former child golf prodigy, she now waits tables in Harvard Square and rents a tiny, moldy room at the side of a garage where she works on the novel she has been writing for six years. Amidst the mounting tension between the two rivals, a surprising newcomer is handpicked to be Beartown\u2019s new hockey coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon a new team starts to take shape around Amat, the fastest player you\u2019ll ever see; Benji, the intense lone wolf; and Vidar, a born-to-be-bad troublemaker. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 \u2014\u201cQ is for \u2018question mark.\u2019 A world that bears a question.\u201d Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell\u2019s\u20141Q84 is Haruki Murakami\u2019s most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kafka on the Shore <\/em>is powered by two remarkable characters: a teenage boy, Kafka Tamura, who runs away from home either to escape a gruesome oedipal prophecy or to search for his long-missing mother and sister; and an aging simpleton called Nakata, who never recovered from a wartime affliction and now is drawn toward Kafka for reasons that, like the most basic activities of daily life, he cannot fathom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As their paths converge, and the reasons for that convergence become clear, Haruki Murakami enfolds readers in a world where cats talk, fish fall from the sky, and spirits slip out of their bodies to make love or commit murder. Kafka on the Shore<\/em> displays one of the world’s great storytellers at the peak of his powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brimming with humour, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count\u2019s endeavour to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When four classmates from a small Massachusetts college move to New York to make their way, they’re broke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition. There is kind, handsome Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, a quick-witted, sometimes cruel Brooklyn-born painter seeking entry to the art world; Malcolm, a frustrated architect at a prominent firm; and withdrawn, brilliant, enigmatic Jude, who serves as their center of gravity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The six-day excursion becomes a journey into the past of Stevens and England, a past that takes in fascism, two world wars, and an unrealised love between the butler and his housekeeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
