Cute & Predictable: The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

The Lost Apothecary: A Novel

This was a cute albeit a predictable read. I’ll keep this simple and tell you what I liked vs what I didn’t like as much about it.

Things I liked:
– the multiple POVs;
– girl power!;
– clear distinction between both timelines (we follow two characters, one in the past, one in the present);
– the love of research all characters have;
– a different sort of sightseeing in London;
– making new friends in unexpected places;
– lastly, this stunning cover!

Things I didn’t like as much:
– the ‘soap opera’ style plot twist with Caroline’s family life;
– I didn’t predict the ending itself but several plot points are indeed predictable;
– I thought I was reading YA the whole time even though the characters are adults;
– writing was relatively simple, for a book dealing with herbs, remedies, etc. I’ve thought it’d be a bit more on the flowery side.

Overall, happy to have read it and the audiobook was the right choice for me. A good author debut indeed, we’ll see if it’ll be a memorable one down the line.

Have you read this? What did you think?
